![]() third was a muddy, directionless mess. So steer clear of those if you haven't seen them, even though the first one leaves you wanting more. The Matrix shows how virtual reality has become a weapon in a war between humanity and artificial intelligence. There's a lot of looking at the nature of reality, and the meaning of it all. It's definitely a thinking sci-fi movie. As you can see from the rest of the site, I'm no fan of kung fu movies, but the Wachowski brothers have done a good job of taking that style of ultra violence and applying it to a great hardcore sci-fi movie. The Matrix is such a classic sci-fi story, and it uses ideas from all over the sci-fi world. The only other movies off the top of my head that have the same level of action are Equilibrium and The Replacement Killers. Plus, what I love is that the sci-fi isn't watered down or made simpler, it's hardcore all the way with no apologies. The Matrix stars Keanu Reeves [from Point Break, Speed, Johnny Mnemonic, The Devil's Advocate and the Bill & Ted movies], ![]() Laurence Fishburne [from Hoodlum, Red Heat, Fled and Event Horizon], Carrie Anne Moss [from Memento], Hugo Weaving [from The Lord of the Rings movies] and Joe Pantoliano [from The Goonies, Midnight Run, Bound, Memento, The Sopranos and The Handler]. There are so many fantastic scenes in The Matrix. I especially love when the agents "bug" Neo, when Neo wakes up in the power plant, and the big assault on the building and rescue of Morpheus. Once you watch The Matrix, watch The Animatrix if you want more. It's a bit uneven but some of the stories are really mind-blowing. The Matrix logo links to the official site. ![]() [the only other one that comes to mind is Foolproof]. Cube starts with Alderson [Julian Richings from Urban Legend and Wrong Turn] waking up and finding himself in a strange square room with strange lighting and a hatch on every wall, and the ceiling and floor. Then he sets off a booby trap and is cut into small pieces by a wire grid. Just that scene let me know I was in for something cool! The rest of the movie is about six other people who find themselves in the same maze. The trick is nobody knows how they got there or why and some rooms are deadly traps. The captives include Leaven [the very cute Nicole de Boer from Star Trek: DS9, The Outer Limits and The Dead Zone], ![]() Worth [David Hewlitt from Foolproof and the awesome new Stargate: Atlantis], Quentin [Maurice Dean Wint from Sci Factor and The Outer Limits], Rennes [Wayne Robson from Ray Bradbury Theatre, Red Green, Wrong Turn and too many other to mention], Holloway [Nicky Guadagni], and Kazan [Andrew Miller, interview]. As the movie goes on, we get mostly just speculation on the origin and reason for the trap they're in. Cube gives you many questions and pretty much nothing in the way of answers, and I think that's what makes it work so well! Oh, and avoid Cube 2 like the plague, it's a cheap attempt to cash in on the original. Cube Zero is awesome though, if you like Cube, see Cube Zero today! ![]() original Universal Soldier. The movie is based on a comic book [I've never read any], and after this movie did pretty well, ABC aired 9 episodes of a cool Timecop TV Series. Recently, they made a very crappy "sequel" that went straight to "one free with every pizza delivery" and rightfully so. Timecop is about The Time Enforcement Commission [TEC], who use time travel technology to protect the timestream from tampering. Van Damme plays TEC Agent Max Walker. His boss, Commander Matuzak, is played by frequent time travel guy Bruce McGill [Jack Dalton from MacGyver]. He was in the first and last episodes of Quantum Leap, and the commander of a Federation Timeship on Star Trek Voyager. Also great are Mia Sara [from Legend, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Time Trax and Birds of Prey] as Agent Walker's hot wife, Gloria Reuben [from ER, The Flash and The Agency] as another Timecop, and Ron Silver [from The Arrival and Veronica's Closet]. Timecop has good ![]() effects, a cool story and quite a few memorable scenes. I love when Walker gets transported right in front of a big truck and has to think quickly, or the guy who gets his arm frozen and smashed off, and Timecop has the best example I've seen of the "the same matter cannot occupy the same space" rule. The only thing that sucks is the DVD. Honestly, why they would only release it as a butchered pan&scan I'll never know. It's like going to the drive-in, parking backwards and watching from the trunk through the keyhole. Links are really scarce for this movie. I've linked the Timecop logo to a gallery I put together, here are some other cool Timecop links:Timecop at the IMDB. ![]() is accidentally released. It kills most of the human race, leaving the survivors to rebuild it however they see fit. There are two groups, one led by a friendly old woman with a religion fixation and the others are led by an evil supernatural creature [the devil?] in the form of a man named Randall Flagg. The Stand is such a huge story that it had to be made as a tv miniseries just because a theatrical movie couldn't hold everything. Being for tv might have taken a bit of the edge off of the story, but it's so well done you'll never notice. The Stand is really a classic apocalyptic story like 12 Monkeys, Jeremiah and Y: Last Man, so if you like this movie, check those out. Also, the movie is over 6 hours, so you might want to watch it in parts. ![]() The Stand is one of my favorite Stephen King adaptations, but I haven't read the book so I don't know how close they are. The most phenominal thing about the movie is the great casting! The fantastically huge cast includes Gary Sinise [from Ransom, Impostor and The Green Mile], Molly Ringwald, Jamey Sheridan [from Now And Again and Law & Order CI] is perfect as Randall Flagg, Laura San Giacomo, Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis, Miguel Ferrer [from Crossing Jordan, The Night Flier and Robocop], Corin Nemec [Jonas Quinn from Stargate SG1], Matt Frewer [from Max Headroom, Psi Factor, Doctor Doctor and Taken], Adam Storke [from Prey and the unaired original pilot for TWO], Ray Walston [from Star Trek TNG and Voyager, Sledge Hammer!, Night Court, Matt Houston and Buck Rogers],![]() Rob Lowe [from The West Wing and Contact], Bill Fagerbakke [from Gargoyles and Lloyd in Space], Peter Van Norden [from The Invisible Man and Dark Skies], Max Wright [Willie from Alf], Patrick Kilpatrick [from The Replacement Killers, Eraser, Timecop, Nowhere Man, Time Trax and Star Trek Voyager], Shawnee Smith [from Saw, The Blob and Becker], Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is great as the crazy street preacher, Troy Evans [from The Frighteners, Demolition Man and ER] and Ed Harris [from Needful Things, The Truman Show, The Rock and Glengarry Glen Ross]. ![]() could easily be played as just comedy. But Chucky has overcome all that to become a classic horror character! I like the other Child's Play movies to varying degrees[except Seed Of Chucky, that really sucked], but Bride of Chucky is the best so far. Brad Dourif [from Alien Resurrection, Prophecy 3, Star Trek: Voyager and Babylon 5] is back as the voice of Chucky. He gets resurrected by his old girlfriend Tiffany [the very hot Jennifer Tilly from Bound, Liar Liar and Monsters Inc.], who he then kills and resurrects into a doll. Then the deadly doll duo hatch a plan to use some teenagers to help them ![]() get back into human bodies. Tiffany even pokes fun at Chucky's old slasher ways, saying he has no imagination. So this time Chucky uses a lot of cool ways to kill the people in his way. Including killing a cop [John Ritter from Stephen King's IT, Problem Child and Bad Santa] with nails, leaving him looking like Pinhead! The main human cast is cool too, including Nick Stabile, Katherine Heigl [from Roswell] and Gord Woolvett [from Andromeda]. Bride of Chucky really brought back the Chucky franchise from mothballs and it's a great overall horror movie! If you're a fan of old school, Fangoria type horror movies like Freddy vs. Jason [by the same director], then you'll really enjoy Bride Of Chucky.
