Okay, none of the other great movies on the site are in any real order. But John Carpenter's masterpiece They Live is first here for a reason. I've seen the movie over 150 times, it's by far the greatest movie I've ever seen! It's like a religion to me, I worship this movie. It's what made me such a big movie fan, not to mention conspiracy nut. And it's the inspiration I had to make my own web site in the first place! It's the ultimate conspiracy and paranoia movie! Written and directed by John Carpenter, They Live is based on the short story "8 O'Clock In The Morning". It stars Roddy Piper [nobody else would've ever fit this part so perfectly] as Nada, a drifter in a world with a disappearing middle class. Banks are closing and work has dried up. He meets up with Frank [Keith David from The Thing, The Puppet Masters, Armageddon, Pitch Black, Requiem For A Dream and Gargoyles], another guy trying to get by. They both get drawn out of humanity's collective daydream by messages in weird pirate tv signals, and finally special sunglasses that reveal the truth. Ugly extradimensional creatures have put a subliminal signal out through televisions even when they're off. The signals hide the creatures and their subliminal commands on everything. Commands like OBEY, STAY ASLEEP, MARRY AND REPRODUCE and NO INDEPENDENT THOUGHT are everywhere. Their signal makes them look like people and their signs look like real billboards and newspapers. Nada and Frank join the small resistance and end up kicking a ton of alien ass. Also great in They Live are Meg Foster [from Masters of the Universe, Quantum Leap, Sliders, DS9, Xena and Hercules] with that unforgettable icy stare, George Buck Flower [from The Fog, Starman, Back To The Future, Pumpkinhead, Body Bags, Village of the Damned and Wishmaster], Peter Jason [from Brewster's Million, Prince of Darkness, In The Mouth of Madness and Village of the Damned]. Killer Klowns From Outer Space is more than you think it is. Sure, it sounds like a B-Movie, but it's a lot more than that. It's about Mike [Grant Cramer], Debbie [Suzanne Snyder, also very cool in Return of The Living Dead Part II, and Night Of The Creeps!], and Dave [John Allen Nelson, also in the pilot episode of Quantum Leap], who are on the front lines of an alien invasion [50's style!]. John Vernon [also great in Heavy Metal and a ton of great tv shows] is great as crusty old Sgt. Mooney too. The aliens look and act like clowns and like to digest people inside cotton candy cocoons, then drink their juices through crazystraws! They trap people in balloons, all of these huge evil Klowns drive around in a tiny Klown Kar, plus they kill with pies and popcorn! They even fake out one girl with the old pizza delivery guy trick. Plus, these aren't just guys with makeup, they're huge, evil-looking creatures! They're the coolest clowns I've ever seen!! It's inspired by the classic horror style of The Blob or Invasion of the Bodysnatchers, with a little The Day The Earth Stood Still thrown in. Sure it's funny, but some parts are genuinely creepy. You can really tell that The Chiodo Brothers who made this are real genre movie fans. Horror/Sci-Fi/Comedy is a hard nut to crack. Many have tried, but nobody's done it like Killer Klowns. See this one, preferably on dvd so you can hear the great commentary track! Hackers is such a great movie! I really think that it's the combination of the mind-blowing soundtrack and cool imagery representing the computer stuff! The writing and cast is great too. This is the movie that really made me a Matthew Lillard fan. The cast includes Jonny Lee Miller as Dade Murphy/Zero Cool/Crash Override, Angelina Jolie [from Gone In 60 Seconds and the Tomb Raider movies] as Kate Libby/Acid Burn, Jesse Bradford [from The West Wing] as Joey, Matthew Lillard [cool in Scream, Thirteen Ghosts, and the Scooby Doo movies] as Emmanuel Goldstein/Cereal Killer, Laurence Mason [from The Crow] as Lord Nikon, Renoly Santiago [from Con Air] as Phantom Phreak, Fisher Stevens [from Early Edition and the Short Circuit movies], Lorraine Bracco [from The Sopranos] and Penn Jillette [great on Penn & Teller Bullshit]. Everyone's great, but I think the most important thing in the movie is the great Hackers soundtrack! With music by Underworld, Prodigy, Leftfield, Orbital and others. That's some of the best techno music you'll find anywhere, It's definitely a must-have disc!! If you like them you should also check out some of my other favorites like Praga Khan, Kai Tracid, Crystal Method and Astral Projection [all these link to Amazon.com where you can either buy the cd or get the track list for downloading purposes]. Aside from a scene where they give some [now] old computer specs, the movie still stands up well. Jonny Lee Miller married Angelina Jolie around the time of this movie, despite the terrible ugly haircut she had for the film. Needless to say, that marriage didn't last. Oh, and there's a movie called Hackers 2 that has absolutely nothing to do with this one so don't be fooled. The Gibson is the fictional mainframe in the movie. It's named after cyberpunk author William Gibson The hacker manifesto read in the movie is real. It's from a 1986 issue of Phrack magazine When Hackers was released, the official site was hacked and covered in graffiti. The studio liked the idea and left it. Watching 12 Monkeys for the first time was mind blowing! A plague has wiped out most of the earth's population [just like The Stand, Jeremiah or Y: The Last Man], and the survivors quarantine themselves underground. Well, the scientists in charge have a time travel device and send a man named Cole [Bruce Willis from The 6th Sense, Pulp Fiction, The Die Hard movies, and Blind Date among others] back in time to "track the path of the virus". That's what I really like about this movie, he's not trying to prevent anything, because like he says "it already happened". He ends up spending most of his time in the past with Dr. Kathryn Railly [Madeleine Stowe from Impostor] who tries to help him, and Jeffrey Goines [played perfectly by Brad Pitt from Seven and Fight Club], a real nutcase. As the course of the movie goes on, Cole becomes unsure of what's real and what's not. He even ponders if he's mentally ill and not really a time traveller. This is a real thinking man's movie, and nothing is spoon fed to you like most movies. In the end, you're left to draw your own conclusions about what went on. I have to say too, that Terry Gilliam who made this movie is a true artist, and in the DVD extras you can really see his artistic drive and integrity are the main forces guiding him. The only other movie of his I really liked was Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, but I have nothing but respect for the guy, he's an artistic genius. This is not your average time travel movie, but then again there's nothing average about it at all. I'm no Brad Pitt fan either, but 12 Monkeys, Seven and Fight Club are three of the greatest movies of all time. See this movie or kick yourself for missing out. Strange Days is a cool near-future scifi movie [even though the dates in the movie have passed]. In the movie, there's this underground, formerly government technology that records experiences straight from the brain. These are stored on discs as "clips". Anything somebody can do can be recorded and the experience can be sold. Lenny Nero [Ralph Fiennes] sells these clips, and as he says "These aren't like TV only better". He comes across a clip showing the cops executing a famous black rapper, and at the same time a psycho killer sends him a clip of a girl he knows getting murdered. With the help of his good friend "Mace" [Angela Bassett from Contact], he tries to figure out this mess that somehow involves his ex-girlfriend Faith [the creepy Juliette Lewis from Natural Born Killers and From Dusk Till Dawn, horribly miscast as a hot singer] and his friend Max [Tom Sizemore from Point Break, Natural Born Killers, Heat, Saving Private Ryan, Enemy of the State and Dreamcatcher]. Meanwhile, they have to stay one step ahead of the murderous cops Engelman [William Fichtner from Contact, Heat, Armageddon, Equilibrium and Prison Break] and Steckler [Vincent D'Onofrio from Men in Black, The Thirteenth Floor, Impostor and Law & Order CI]. Some of the playback scenes are really memorable, especially the robbery at the start! Strange Days is a really excellent and underrated Virtual Reality movie, and a definite must-see!
