Some really great scifi movies have been made based on classic scifi novels. Philip K. Dick's movies like Total Recall, Screamers and others come to mind. And Robert A. Heinlein's work has produced two of my favorites,   The Puppet Masters and Starship Troopers. The Puppet Masters is a bit like Invasion of the Bodysnatchers, but different enough to stand on it's own. And the alien creatures are like something from a David Cronenberg movie. They land and start to spread and take over everything. Donald Sutherland [from Invasion of the Bodysnatchers 1978, Lock Up, Backdraft, The Assignment, and Fallen among others] isn't new to this kind of movie, he was in the great 70's remake of Body Snatchers. The rest of the cast is great and includes some of my favorite character actors. The cast has Eric Thal [this is his most notable work], the very hot Julie Warner [had small roles in Flatliners and Star Trek: TNG], Keith David [awesome in The Thing, They Live, Armageddon, Pitch Black,   Requiem For A Dream, Chronicles of Riddick, Gargoyles, Despero on Justice League, and The Outer Limits], Will Patton [from Armageddon, Gone In 60 Seconds and The Agency], Richard Belzer [from The Flash and Law & Order:SVU] and Marshall Bell [from Freddy's Revenge, Total Recall, Natural Born Killers, Truth Or Consequences N.M., Starship Troopers, and Virus]. So you know the cast rules, but the story's good too. The Puppet Masters is definitely one of my favorite alien invasion movies. Stargate is a fantastic sci-fi epic! It's yet another big blockbuster from Devlin and Emmerich, the guys who made Independence Day and The Day After Tomorrow. As a standalone story,  it's about the discovery of an intergalactic gateway that leads to answers about our past. Specifically all the egyptian monuments and mythology. It's a perfect take on the old "aliens built the pyramids" conspiracy theory. It's the story of how this device is found and sends a team through for the first time. They discover than the device was buried to keep an evil alien calling himself Ra away from Earth. The cast does a great job, including Kurt Russell [from The Thing, Soldier, Breakdown, Tombstone and Backdraft], James Spader [from The Watcher, Supernova and The Practice], Alexis Cruz [from Stargate SG1], Mili Avital, Erick Avari [from Stargate SG1], French Stewart [from Broken Arrow, Third Rock From The Sun and The New WKRP], Jaye Davidson, and Richard Kind [from Spin City, Nowhere Man and The Commish]. But if you're a fan of the show, the movie's cast is off the mark just a bit. The world of Stargate has become a very popular and long running sci-fi franchise.  First with Stargate SG1, then Stargate Atlantis was added. They've added so much more to the mythology, and in the first SG1 it's discovered there are more aliens who pose as Egyptian gods and the Stargate can go to a lot more places. Still, as a start, this original Stargate movie is great and gave the tv writers a lot to work with. So if you haven't seen the movie, watch it. Then watch all the SG1 and Atlantis that you can get your hands on! I especially love the cool mechanical masks the "gods" wear, too bad they've been pretty much phased out on the tv show. Monsters Inc. is an absolute classic! There has been a big animation craze lately, mostly started by Pixar. Some of these movies like Shark Tale and Madagascar were shallow imitations of good movies.  But there are movies like Monsters Inc. and The Incredibles that really stand out as cinematic greatness! Monsters Inc. is about a monster world that connects to us through closet doors. The monsters get their energy from children's screams, but at the same time they're terrified of kids. The main characters in the story are Mike Wazowski [voice by Billy Crystal from My Giant and City Slickers], James P. "Sulley" Sullivan [voice by John Goodman from The Big Lebowski, Fallen, Matinee, Roseanne and Now and Again], Randall Boggs [voice by Steve Buscemi from The Big Lebowski, Con Air, The Island, Airheads, Reservoir Dogs and The Sopranos], Henry J. Waternoose III [voice by James Coburn from Eraser and Captain Planet], Celia [voice by Jennifer Tilly from Liar Liar and Bride Of Chucky],  and The Abominable Snowman [voice by John Ratzenberger from Cheers and Toy Story] just to name a few. The story and characters in Monsters Inc. are so great, and the movie's a riot even after you see it a few times! I love how the Child Detection Agency [monster hazmat team] grab a poor guy with a sock on him and shave him down to bare skin, makes me laugh every time! You won't believe how great the graphics and animation are either. The scene where Sulley is out in the blizard really shows off the quality perfectly. You can't really go wrong with an action filled script and a huge cast of phenominal actors. That's exactly what Con Air is.   It stars Nick Cage [from Raising Arizona, The Rock, Face Off, Gone in 60 Seconds, National Treasure and Ghost Rider] as a former ranger who just finished doing time for a bar fight gone wrong. His ride home is a plane full of the worst bad guys in the system. Well, it turns out there's a plan for the inmates to take over the plane, and Cage gets caught up in the mayhem. The cast is absolutely phenominal, including John Malkovich [from Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy] as Cyrus the Virus, John Cusack [from City Hall, Pushin Tin, High Fidelity and Runaway Jury], Rachel Ticotin [from Total Recall, Critical Condition and The Outer Limits], Danny Trejo [from From Dusk Till Dawn, Heat and The Replacement Killers], Monica Potter [from Saw], M.C. Gainey [from The New Guy], Steve Buscemi   [from Reservoir Dogs, Airheads, The Big Lebowski, Monsters Inc. and The Sopranos], Dave Chappelle [from Half Baked, Blue Streak, Undercover Brother and Chappelle's Show], Ving Rhames [from Pulp Fiction, Mission Impossible, Body Count and the remake of Dawn of the Dead], Mykelti Williamson [from Heat and Truth or Consequences N.M.], Colm Meaney [from Star Trek: TNG, DS9 and Stargate Atlantis], and Renoly Santiago [from Hackers]. Blue Streak is one of my favorite comedies, and Martin Lawrence's best movie so far! Miles Logan [Martin Lawrence from Black Knight, National Security and the Bad Boys movies] is a highly skilled jewel thief.  During a big heist, something goes wrong and he ends up in jail. But he stashed the big diamond from the heist in the construction site where he was arrested. When he gets out, he's freaked out to see that the building is a police station. So he comes up with a crazy plan to pose as a cop to get in and get his loot. He ends up doing real police work with hilarious results. You have to see Blue Streak to really believe how funny it is. Also great in the movie are Luke Wilson [from Legally Blonde, Home Fries and That 70's Show] as Logan's partner Carlson, Graham Beckel [from Fallen and Bulworth], Carmen Argenziano [from Gone In 60 Seconds, Broken Arrow and Stargate SG1], William Forsythe [from The Rock, Virtuosity and John Doe], and Dave Chappelle [from Half Baked, Con Air, Undercover Brother and Chappelle's Show].  I especially love the scenes where Logan is interrogating somebody, and every scene with Dave Chappelle's character Tulley is a real riot. I love when he's cornered by the cops and just sticks his gun around the corner and shoots, what a riot! Blue Streak is directed by Les Mayfield, who also directed the hilarious movie The Man. See that movie for even more laughs! Blue Streak has a ton of great laughs, plus some cool action and very likeable characters. TBS shows it all the time, and I still laugh when I see it.
