 I like this page's mix of stoner and horror movies. From stoner classics The Big Lebowski and Half Baked, to the underrated 80's zombie classic Night of The Creeps, great ghost story Stir of Echoes, and the awesome 1958 classic Invasion of the Body Snatchers! The Big Lebowski was recommended to me by a fan of the site, and now it's one of my favorite comedies ever! It stars Jeff Bridges [from Blown Away, Arlington Road, Starman and Tron] as The Dude, grand   poobah of stoned, drunken slackers. He brings slacking to an all new plateau, he's my hero. Everywhere he goes, he has a White Russian, a joint or both. But this isn't really a stoner movie, even though The Dude's most certainly a stoner. Nope, his true gift and calling is the way of the slacker. He's the grand master of the slacker lifestyle and proud of it. He'll write a cheque for less than a dollar, forget which way his front door opens, and crash his car into a dumpster because of a burning roach and some spilled beer! John Goodman [from Fallen, Monsters Inc., Matinee, Arachnophobia and Now and Again] is also fantastic as The Dude's military-obsessed buddy Walter. Walter won't hesitate to pull a gun for a rules violation at the bowling alley, or insinuate his way into a ransom drop complete with a ringer full of laundry and an uzi! This   movie is all about the characters and the rest of the cast is great including Julianne Moore [from Evolution and Roomates], Steve Buscemi [from Reservoir Dogs, Con Air, Monsters Inc and The Sopranos], the ultra hot Tara Reid [from Urban Legend, American Pie and Just Visiting], Philip Seymour Hoffman [from Almost Famous] and David Huddleston [grandpa from The Wonder Years!] as The Big Lebowski himself. I especially love when The Dude's car is stolen and it shows the empty handicapped spot where his car was, what a riot! If The Big Lebowski doesn't make you laugh, nothing will! Stir Of Echoes is a great and very underrated ghost story. I was lucky enough to see this movie in it's theatrical run.   The hyptnotizing scene with the theater is so Outer Limits when you're sitting in a theater. The cool thing about the movie I just found out is it was written by Richard Matheson, his other book I Am Legend was adapted into The Last Man On Earth and Omega Man. Stir Of Echoes is about blue collar father Tom Witzky [Kevin Bacon from Flatliners, Tremors and Friday The 13th]. Tom gets hyptnotized at a party and then he's haunted by compulsions and visions he doesn't understand. I think Kevin Bacon did a really awesome acting job in Stir Of Echoes. I haven't seen such a convincing compulsion since Close Encounters. Also cool in the movie are the very hot Kathryn Erbe [from What About Bob? and Law & Order: Criminal Intent] as Tom's concerned wife Maggie, and Zachary David Cope as the bug eyed son who sees what Tom sees.   This movie came out just after The Sixth Sense, and the surface similarities turned people off. There's a kid and ghosts, but Stir Of Echoes is more like Flatliners and Poltergeist than The Sixth Sense. It could even be said to have the same world as The Sixth Sense, but a really different angle on the story. It wouldn't be here if I didn't think it was great! I especially love the scary camera effects used for the ghost's movements, very creepy! The director's commentary on the DVD is one of my favorites, you can tell writer and director David Koepp really loves making movies. This is a great classic ghost story, so give it a look. Night Of The Creeps is a classic 80's zombie movie! I only found out about this gem a few years ago. See, my favorite game for years [until VtM: Bloodlines came out] was Blood.  That game uses a ton of cool horror movie stuff, like Trioxin cannisters from Return Of The Living Dead, a Crystal Lake stage, and axe-wielding zombies. It turns out those zombies were a homage to the ones from Night Of The Creeps. The movie starts on an alien ship where an experiment is released into space and ends up on earth. These alien slugs get into a person and turn them into a zombie while more slugs incubate in the brain. Once that process is complete, the zombie's head spills open with more slugs that go out and find more victims. It's great horror with a cool sci-fi twist [like the Phantasm movies]. The acting is actually very cool even though the movie's low on the budget end of things. The cast includes Tom Atkins [from The Fog, Rockford Files and OZ], Jason Lively, Steve Marshall and the very hot Jill Whitlow. Also making cool but short appearances are Dick Miller [from Demon Knight, Matinee, Gremlins, The Terminator, Dead Heat, The Burbs, The Flash and Eerie Indiana], David Paymer [from City Slickers, Bait and The Commish], and Suzanne Snyder [from Killer Klowns, Return Of The Living Dead 2 and Seinfeld].  Night Of The Creeps is as classic and well done as any other great 80's horror movie! And it's one of my favorite takes on the whole zombie scene. I especially love the scene with the zombie chopping through the floor to get his axe on an old lady, and the great showdown where Jill Whitlow is all dressed up and using a flamethrower to hold off the zombie onslaught! Unfortunately, Night Of The Creeps isn't out on DVD or VHS. There are copies on ebay, but they're bootlegged from an old out of print VHS release. Also, I read there are two endings for the movie, but I've only seen one. This underrated zombie classic needs to get a good DVD release! I love stoner movies, and Half Baked is one of the best! The movie is about four friends who get high together all the time. The guys are played excellently by Dave Chappelle [also great in Con Air and Blue Streak and Chappelle's Show]  as Thurgood, Guillermo Diaz as Scarface, Jim Breuer as Brian, and Harland Williams [hilariously funny in Rocketman!] as Kenny. When Kenny gets arrested on a munchies run for feeding his munchies [Sour Cream & Onion Chips, Dip, Beef Jerky, Peanut Butter, Hagen Das Ice Cream Bars, Popcorn, Graham Crackers, Chocolate Bars, Mini Marshmallows, Celery, Grape Jelly, Captain Crunch with Crunch Berries, 2 Loaded Pizzas, Water and Funions] to a diabetic police horse. The other guys try to figure out a way to get him out of prison before he becomes someone's dancing partner. Thurgood figures out a way to swipe some government grown weed from his work. Then the boys start selling super-potent weed to raise the bail money they need to spring their friend. Meanwhile Thurgood meets a girl named Mary Jane [Rachel True] who is against drugs, so he's trying to hide his habit from her. Half Baked  is a real riot! Especially cool are all of the celebrity appearances, like comedian Steven Wright [also in Natural Born Killers] as "The guy on the couch", and Jon Stewart [from The Daily Show] as the enhancement smoker! Tommy Chong [from the Cheech & Chong movies and That 70's Show] even makes an appearance! I'm not advocating drug use here, I just don't believe that "They" should decide anything for us. The original classic 1956 version of The Invasion Of The Body Snatchers is the very best version ever made! The 1978 remake with Donald Sutherland is a great second place, and the 1993 remake is wretched and should be avoided.  A crappy fourth remake is in the works with Nicole Kidman [they say it's not a remake], I couldn't have lower expectations for that. The original stars Kevin McCarthy [from Innerspace, The Howling and UHF] as Dr. Miles Bennell. The doctor slowly discovers an extraterrestrial threat is replacing everyone in his town. They look, sound and even remember like the replaced people, but they have no feelings and they're on their own alien takeover agenda. The suspense and creepiness achieved in this classic still works perfectly today. Invasion Of The Body Snatchers is a real classic no matter its age. It's right up there with Frankenstein, The Day The Earth Stood Still and The Last Man On Earth. Dana Wynter is excellent [and hot] as Becky Driscoll, Dr. Bennell's old flame. And watch for Carolyn Jones [Morticia on the classic Addams Family] as Mrs. Belicec.  As the whole conspiracy gets bigger and bigger, Miles Bennell figures it out and tries to stop them. Stuck in a town full of pod people, he eventually ends up on the run, trying to convince everybody that the invaders are here. The movie even starts with the doctor being dragged in to a see a psychiatrist, just like In The Mouth Of Madness! The acting is great, and the story and atmosphere of the movie kick ass! Everyone should see this 1956 original before they see any others, it really is the best! Definitely the grandfather of paranoia movies like They Live, Disturbing Behavior, Enemy Of The State and The Puppet Masters.
