![]() And even more than that, he's a cool actor too, especially his nutcase serial killer he played in Nightbreed! Anyway, with him behind Scanners, you can't go wrong! I'd even say that Scanners is his best movie! It's about people who get powerful mental abilities from a pre-natal drug [ephemerol]. The leading expert on scanners, Dr. Paul Ruth [Patrick McGoohan from Braveheart, The Prisoner, Columbo and The Simpsons] cleans up a homeless guy named Cameron Vale to become a powerful weapon. It turns out that Cameron Vale [Stephen Lack from Dead Ringers] is one of the most powerful scanners. Now, with the help of pyrokinetic Kim Obrist [Jennifer O'Neill from Time Changer and Poltergeist: The Legacy], he has to stop an evil scanner agenda. The scanner leader, Darryl Revok, is played perfectly by Michael Ironside [from Total Recall, Starship Troopers, Mindfield, Ray Bradbury Theater, V The Series, Tales From The Crypt, Seaquest DSV, ER, The Outer Limits, Smallville and Stargate SG-1]. I'm a huge fan of his work, and this is one of his best movies! ![]() Also cool in the movie are Lawrence Dane [from Bride Of Chucky, Darkman II, Time Shifters, Le Femme Nikita and The Outer Limits], Geza Kovacs [from The Dead Zone, The Twilight Zone and Earth: Final Conflict] and Robert A. Silverman [from Jason X, eXistenZ and Naked Lunch]. There's a very famous scene in Scanners where Darryl Revok uses his scanning ability to actually explode a guy's head just by thinking about it! And I can't remember seeing a battle like the climax of Scanners, it has to be seen to be believed! There are other great movies and shows with mental abilities in them, like Firestarter and The 4400, but none where the powers are shown so viciously as only Cronenberg can. So give Scanners a look and I hope you like it as much as I do! The Scanners logo links to a cool gallery [with awesome Scanners desktop wallpapers!] I made! Ruth - "Freak of nature, born with a certain form of ESP; derangement of the synapses which we call telepathy." Revok - "Alright, we're gonna do it the scanner way. I'm going to suck your brain dry." The exploding head scene was accomplished by filling a latex model of Louis Del Grande's head with dog food and rabbit livers, and shooting it from behind with a 12-gauge shotgun. |

![]() Bigelow [Joe Piscopo from Johnny Dangerously, Saturday Night Live and Law & Order] on the trail of some jewel thieves that just won't die no matter how much you shoot them. Yes, it's a zombie movie, but a totally different and cool take on it! Early on Mortis is killed and reanimated, now he's on the trail of his killer. The special effects are great in this one too, from zombie makeup, to creatures, one person dissolves in one excellent scene. And there's a very cool scene where a whole butcher shop is reanimated! My favorite scene is after Mortis crashes an ambulance and is put into a body bag. Well, he climbs out and flashes his badge to a very freaked out motorcycle cop, takes his gun and motorcycle and ![]() speeds off. Very cool! I also love the awesome biker monster, the awesome resurrection machine and how it works, and the great action packed ending! The movie does have a lighter tone though and that could put some people off. Sure, it's a bit cheesy, but only a bit and the cool stuff more than makes up for it. The other cast members are good too and include Darren McGavin [from A Christmas Story, Gunsmoke, Kolchak: The Night Stalker, Magnum P.I., Murphy Brown, The Commish, Grace Under Fire and The X-Files], Vincent Price [also great in The Last Man On Earth], Lindsay Frost [from The Ring, Seaquest DSV, CSI, Crossing Jordan, CSI Miami and Lost], Clare Kirkconnell [from Amazing Stories, The Fall Guy and The A-Team], Keye Luke [also in Battle of the Planets, Thundarr the Barbarian and Gremlins among others], and Robert Picardo [cool in The Howling, Star Trek: First Contact, Total Recall, as well as The Wonder Years and Star Trek: Voyager]. This is good timing too, as the DVD is just out, widescreen with extras! This is a very underrated movie and there aren't too many links for it out there. ![]() This has been done in movies like Short Circuit and Bicentennial Man, and shows like The Outer Limits and Star Trek: TNG. This movie takes an approach like Total Recall or The Island, so if you like action/sci-fi you'll like I, Robot. Will Smith [from Enemy of the State, Men In Black and ID4] stars as Detective Spooner, a guy who's not too happy with the "progress" that's been made in this future world. Robots are everywhere and they take care of a lot of the manual labour jobs like garbage man or dog walker. Wouldn't that even further divide the poor and the upper class? Anyway, Spooner doesn't trust these robots that are everywhere, and he has his reasons. When a scientist friend of his [played by James Cromwell from Star Trek: First Contact, Deep Impact, Eraser and others] is killed and the evidence points to a robot, Spooner's on the case. The writing, acting and robots are all great in I, Robot. Spooner eventually teams up with a scientist who works on making the robots better [Bridget Moynahan from The Lord Of War], and they lock horns with the owner of US Robotics [they make more than just modems!] Lawrence Robertson ![]() [Bruce Greenwood from Nowhere Man, The Core and Disturbing Behavior]. Oh, and Spooner's boss is played excellently by one of my favorite actors [Chi McBride from The John Larroquette Show, The Frighteners, Hoodlum, Gone in 60 Seconds and The Terminal]. The movie's a great balance between story and action, and there's a lot of Robot mayhem and destruction! I love how the robots attack in swarms and how their color tells you their intention. I think I, Robot is one of Will Smith's best movies, so check it out if you get a chance! The I, Robot logo links to the official site, here are some other cool links:I, Robot at the IMDB. ![]() old scifi show called Galaxy Quest. The actors are has-beens, except to the rabid fans at conventions. This movie is cast perfectly! The cast includes Tim Allen [from For Richer or Poorer], Sigourney Weaver [from Ghostbusters and the Alien series, at her absolute hottest in this!], Alan Rickman [from Die Hard], Tony Shalhoub [from Impostor, Men in Black and Thirteen Ghosts], Sam Rockwell, Daryl "Chill" Mitchell [from The John Larroquette Show, Veronica's Closet and Ed], and Justin Long [from Ed and Jeepers Creepers]. So it turns out that an alien race has intercepted the old episodes of Galaxy Quest and changed their society and technology to fit the show. When an evil alien race threatens to wipe them out, they come looking for the crew of the NSEA Protector to save them. At first Tim Allen's character thinks they're just more fans, but he and eventually his castmates end up in a far region of space, piloting a replica of the ship from the show and fighting for their lives.![]() The graphics and alien effects are as outstanding as anything from Men In Black or any of the Star Wars movies! The movie's fantastic, but what really shines for me is the satire of the old trek tv show. And seeing how I hate crappy old trek, and Tim Allen in most things this movie is pretty awesome to get past all that. And I have to admit, Tim Allen is great in Galaxy Quest and For Richer or Poorer. Galaxy Quest is the perfect light sci-fi action/comedy! I love how the Thermians are all very alien even though they try to be like us, and how Guy always thinks he's the expendable cast member. Plus there the great reality-within-a-reality thing that's played for some great laughs. The movie is the closest I've seen to what live action Futurama would be like, it's so cool!
