![]() A mistake caused the original Night of the Living Dead to become public domain so that's why Romero made that 1990 remake of Night. Now Romero has added Land Of The Dead to his list, but I think it's the weakest of his zombie movies, it just doesn't have that magic that the others have. Dawn Of The Dead takes place after the zombies have spread everywhere and a group with a helicopter stumble onto a mall. They turn the mall into their fortress from the undead world. The story, mood and zombies are all great. Plus I love that there are no huge hollywood stars in it, it makes it more realistic and less predictable. The cast here is great, including David Emge, Ken Foree [from The X-Files, Babylon 5, The Flash and Quantum Leap], Scott H. Reiniger and Gaylen Ross. Plus, the effects and makeup were done by horror icon Tom Savini [did effects for many classics, plus he acted in From Dusk Till Dawn]. I love how they wrangle the zombies that are in the mall so they can get around, and that the zombies shamble and are still a threat. I don't like this trend in remaking excellent movies, ![]() it never turns out as cool. And I don't agree with the new trend to make zombies super fast. That's just not a zombie anymore, and I think it's lazy writing. If you're writing a zombie movie and can't make it scary or menacing without speedfreaks, you should probably stick with writing other stuff. I actually like the Dawn Of The Dead remake as a horror movie, but it's no zombie movie and it was only hurt by using the name of this zombie classic. This classic is out as an Ultimate Edition DVD that I hear has a ton of stuff on it. The only disappointment for me is the not so great artwork Dawn of the Dead has always used for posters and DVD covers. The Dawn of the Dead logo links to the homepage of the dead. ![]() a madman who builds a machine that's powered by ghosts. The machine is a glass and steel house like you've never seen. Everything's glass with runes on it, everywhere in the house. The great cast gets stuck in the machine as it's started. It releases the ghosts one by one and the madman's plan begins! Among the great cast are Tony Shalhoub [from Galaxy Quest, Men in Black and Impostor], Embeth Davidtz [from Fallen, Army of Darkness and Bicentennial Man], Matthew Lillard [from Scream, Hackers and the Scooby Doo movies], Shannon Elizabeth [from American Pie, Tomcats, Off Centre and That 70's Show], JR Bourne [from Stargate SG1, Two, Strange Luck and The Outer Limits], and classic bad guy F. Murray Abraham [from Last Action Hero and Scarface]. But the real stars of this one are the awesome, gory, evil ghosts that are unleashed. Including The Angry Princess [Shawna Loyer],![]() The First Born Son [Mikhael Speidel], The Torso [Daniel Wesley], The Bound Woman [Laura Mennell from Stargate Atlantis, SG-1, Andromeda, Dead Like Me and Millennium], The Withered Lover [Kathryn Anderson from Sliders and The Outer Limits], The Torn Prince [Craig Olejnik], The Pilgrimess [Xantha Radley from Slither, The X-Files, Jeremiah and The Outer Limits], The Great Child [C. ![]() Any movie that mentions Seven in the ads makes me skeptical, but Saw lives up to the hype! It's a serial killer on a rampage movie in the tradition of Seven, The Silence Of The Lambs or Kiss The Girls. But I think that Jigsaw might even be more crazy than John Doe from Seven. He puts people in elaborate traps designed to test their will to live. The movie's mainly about two of his victims, Adam [Leigh Whannell, also co-wrote the movie] and Dr. Gordon [Cary Elwes from The Princess Bride, Kiss The Girls, Liar Liar, The Outer Limits and The X-Files] who wake up in the devil's crapper, chained to pipes on either side of the room. There's a dead guy in the middle of the room and a time limit is set for one to kill the other or his wife [Monica Potter from Con Air and Along Came A Spider] and daughter [Makenzie Vega] are killed. The rest of the cast includes Danny Glover [from Predator 2 and the Lethal Weapon series], Dina Meyer [from Starship Troopers and The Outer Limits], Shawnee Smith [from The Stand, The Blob and Becker], Michael Emerson [from The Practice, The X-Files and Lost]![]() and Tobin Bell [from The Firm, Alien Nation, Stargate SG-1, The Pretender, The X-Files, The Sopranos, Alias and 24]. Shawnee Smith especially steals the show as one of Jigsaw's most memorable victims. Saw really gives you the impression that Jigsaw can't be stopped, and that everybody is five steps behind him. And his ultra creepy puppet and freaky pig mask just add to the movie's atmosphere. One of the inspirations for Saw was Cube, which was shot all on one set. Saw II is great too, and brings back Shawnee Smith's character and Jigsaw! Saw III has them both too and completely ties the whole trilogy back to the first one! If you love Saw, don't dare miss Saw 3! The twists at the end of Saw really blew me away, but then again so did the whole movie. Get yourself a copy of Saw! ![]() marketing campaign! That's the premise behind The Stuff, which to me rivals John Carpenter's great They Live and David Finch's Fight Club as a commentary on out of control consumerism. This evil creature bubbles up out of the ground. Once it's discovered, the greed and gluttony of people does it's work for it. It's the hottest new dessert treat [sort of like Fluff], and the more you eat, the more control it has over you. At first, you're not cool unless you like The Stuff. Then if you're not under it's control, you'll be hunted down and converted by those who are [Stuffies]. Industrial espionage expert Mo Rutherford [Michael Moriarty from Troll, Law & Order, Taken and The 4400] is hired to find out about the origins of The Stuff, and finds more than he ever thought. He ends up teaming up with a kid named Jason [Scott Bloom] on the run from his Stuff-crazed family, and the former director of marketing for The Stuff [Andrea Marcovicci]. They find that it's hard to fight a menace that's so loved and widespread as The Stuff. I especially love the scene where a large blob of The Stuff comes out of Mo Rutherford's pillow![]() and tries to kill him, and when Jason goes on an anti-Stuff rampage in the local grocery store. It's one of the best effects in the movie. Other memorable cast members include Garrett Morris [from Saturday Night Live and Hunter] as Chocolate Chip Charlie, Paul Sorvino [from Law & Order, Still Standing and Star Trek: TNG] as a nutcase military extremist, and Danny Aiello [from The Professional] as an FDA agent who's corrupted by The Stuff. The movie really has that great 50's invasion movie atmosphere, like either versions of The Blob or Killer Klowns. And the best thing is that everything's done relatively seriously, not just for laughs. Some of the effects shots are funny now because of how unrealistic the people look, but you have to take the age of the movie into account. If you can overlook some of the effects that didn't age well, the rest of the movie is absolutely phenominal! I'd love to see a sequel to The Stuff made with today's special effects technology! ![]() like it might never happen. They were waiting for the right story, and the wait was worth it! A battle between the two godfathers of slash, you can't go wrong! Freddy's been forgotten and that's something he can't return from. So he scours the depths of oblivion and comes across Jason Voorhees, who's also between massacres. Freddy unleashes Jason on Elm Street, making people think of his old killing sprees there. Freddy vs. Jason is a perfect balance between the two, and I can't wait for a sequel. I'm a bigger Jason fan, but Freddy's very cool too. This movie provides my all time favorite Jason scene, a flaming Jason on the rampage!! There are lots of classic Freddy and Jason kills, and the very cool hospital full of teens that were drugged to forget Freddy. ![]() And as far as teen victims go, Monica Keena [from The Devil's Advocate, Entourage and Undeclared] is super hot, and the rest of her friends like the very hot Katharine Isabelle [from Disturbing Behavior and Ginger Snaps] and Kelly Rowland aren't as dumb as most slasher victims without doing that "I know it's a horror movie" post-Scream thing. Now I'd like to see something like The Tall Man vs. Michael Myers, or really anybody battling The Tall Man. Speaking of Michael Myers, word is there are talks going on with John Carpenter to add our old friend The Shape to the next movie. I especially love when Freddy appears to Jason as his mother, the cool way the authorities thought to erase Freddy and the great final showdown between the two postmodern movie monsters! Not to mention any scene with Monica Keena or Katharine Isabelle! You have to see Freddy vs. Jason!
