Zombies are one of the coolest horror movie creatures. There are a lot of great zombie movies, but George Romero's Dawn Of The Dead is a real classic! And it's not just a splatter fest either, the make-up and effects are secondary to the characters and plot. It's the second in George Romero's zombie series. First came Night Of The Living Dead, then Dawn Of The Dead, and then Day Of The Dead. A mistake caused the original Night of the Living Dead to become public domain so that's why Romero made that 1990 remake of Night. Now Romero has added Land Of The Dead to his list, but I think it's the weakest of his zombie movies, it just doesn't have that magic that the others have. Dawn Of The Dead takes place after the zombies have spread everywhere and a group with a helicopter stumble onto a mall. They turn the mall into their fortress from the undead world. The story, mood and zombies are all great. Plus I love that there are no huge hollywood stars in it, it makes it more realistic and less predictable. The cast here is great, including David Emge, Ken Foree [from The X-Files, Babylon 5, The Flash and Quantum Leap], Scott H. Reiniger and Gaylen Ross. Plus, the effects and makeup were done by horror icon Tom Savini [did effects for many classics, plus he acted in From Dusk Till Dawn]. I love how they wrangle the zombies that are in the mall so they can get around, and that the zombies shamble and are still a threat. I don't like this trend in remaking excellent movies, it never turns out as cool. And I don't agree with the new trend to make zombies super fast. That's just not a zombie anymore, and I think it's lazy writing. If you're writing a zombie movie and can't make it scary or menacing without speedfreaks, you should probably stick with writing other stuff. I actually like the Dawn Of The Dead remake as a horror movie, but it's no zombie movie and it was only hurt by using the name of this zombie classic. This classic is out as an Ultimate Edition DVD that I hear has a ton of stuff on it. The only disappointment for me is the not so great artwork Dawn of the Dead has always used for posters and DVD covers. The Dawn of the Dead logo links to the homepage of the dead. Thirteen Ghosts is a great horror movie with a cool story, great cast and awesome ghosts. The movie is about a madman who builds a machine that's powered by ghosts. The machine is a glass and steel house like you've never seen. Everything's glass with runes on it, everywhere in the house. The great cast gets stuck in the machine as it's started. It releases the ghosts one by one and the madman's plan begins! Among the great cast are Tony Shalhoub [from Galaxy Quest, Men in Black and Impostor], Embeth Davidtz [from Fallen, Army of Darkness and Bicentennial Man], Matthew Lillard [from Scream, Hackers and the Scooby Doo movies], Shannon Elizabeth [from American Pie, Tomcats, Off Centre and That 70's Show], JR Bourne [from Stargate SG1, Two, Strange Luck and The Outer Limits], and classic bad guy F. Murray Abraham [from Last Action Hero and Scarface]. But the real stars of this one are the awesome, gory, evil ghosts that are unleashed. Including The Angry Princess [Shawna Loyer], The First Born Son [Mikhael Speidel], The Torso [Daniel Wesley], The Bound Woman [Laura Mennell from Stargate Atlantis, SG-1, Andromeda, Dead Like Me and Millennium], The Withered Lover [Kathryn Anderson from Sliders and The Outer Limits], The Torn Prince [Craig Olejnik], The Pilgrimess [Xantha Radley from Slither, The X-Files, Jeremiah and The Outer Limits], The Great Child [C. Ernst Harth from Dreamcatcher, Strange Luck, The X-Files, The Outer Limits, Two, Dead Like Me and The Dead Zone], The Dire Mother [Laurie Soper], The Hammer [Herbert Duncanson from Stargate SG-1 and Jake 2.0], The Jackal [Shayne Wyler from 7 Days] and The Juggernaut [John DeSantis from Harsh Realm, Stargate SG-1, Andromeda, Smallville, Dead Like Me, Masters Of Horror and as Lurch on New Addams Family].
