Crank was by far the absolute best movie of 2006! Crank's like nothing else I've seen. Any action movie, no matter how action packed, has breaks in the action. Not Crank, because if Chev Chelios [Jason Statham from The One, The Transporter, The Italian Job, Transporter 2, Cellular, War, The Bank Job and Deathrace] stops his overcharged adrenaline rush,  he'll die. It's the ultimate action take on the old D.O.A. or Dead Heat dead man walking who uses his last hours to find his killer. So because of a double cross, assassin Chev Chelios gets poisoned, then has to use adrenaline to stall his own death long enough to get his killer. Crank is pure action and the story happens on the run with very few if any breaks till the end. Speaking of the end, I love it and really hated Crank 2. This movie is an amazing piece of art and stands alone. Forget about part 2 and watch part 1 again instead, trust me. The rest of the movie's cast is phenominal too, including Amy Smart [from Starship Troopers, Rat Race, The Butterfly Effect, Just Friends, Mirrors, Robot Chicken and Smith], Jose Pablo Cantillo [from Disturbia, Standoff, The Unit and Virtuality], Dwight Yoakam [from Slingblade, Wedding Crashers and Roswell], Carlos Sanz [from The Agency, 24, Las Vegas, Criminal Minds, Terminator TSCC and Cold Case], Efren Ramirez [from Employee Of The Month, Gamer and Boston Public] and Reno Wilson [from Fallen, The Cosby Show, If Not For You, The Chronicle, Heist, Life, Prison Break and The Philanthropist]. There are so many classic scenes in Crank, like Chev's driving through the mall and sideways up an escalator, the insanely cool scene where Chev shoots the guy with his finger,  Chev's crazy run through the city wearing a hospital gown, Chev shooting the gun with the guy's severed hand still on it, Chev getting the doctor to shock him with the defibrulator and many others. I love Chev Chelios's great phone ringtone that sounds like the phone's dying, and the kickass map shots just like GTA. Jose Pablo Cantillo does such an excellent job as Ricky Verona, he totally holds up his end against Statham's rampaging maniac! I love the disc that says Fuck You on it, and the cool news coverage of Chev's citywide rampage. The movie even takes a more surreal outlook after Chev gets the "Plant Shit" from that crazy cabbie. The final battle is great, and I absolutely love the ending! Like I said, Crank should stand alone, don't worry about sequels just stick with the original. Crank really is a movie you need to see to believe, and if you're an action fan you haven't seen anything quite like this. Jason Statham is in a lot of great movies, but Crank is his best and a definite must see movie! Trading places is an old school comedy like they just don't make anymore. It has a fantastic cast and is just executed perfectly. The movie starts off with rich brothers Randolph Duke [Ralph Bellamy from Oh God, Coming To America, Pretty Woman and The Invaders]  and Mortimer Duke [Don Ameche from Cocoon, Harry And The Hendersons, Coming To America, Cocoon The Return, Folks and Quincy] making a bet to settle the old question of heredity vs. environment. They take their loyal employee Louis Winthorpe III [Dan Aykroyd from Dr. Detroit, Temple Of Doom, Ghostbusters, Spies Like Us, Ghostbusters 2, Evolution, 50 First Dates and Saturday Night Live] from his snobby pampered life and switch him with dodgy street hustler Billy Ray Valentine [Eddie Murphy from 48 Hours, Beverly Hills Cop, Beverly Hills Cop 2, Coming To America, Another 48 Hours, Beverly Hills Cop 3, Bowfinger, Shrek and The PJ's]. So the Duke brothers fire, disgrace and discredit Louis to see if he turns to a life of crime. While they give Billy Ray the royal treatment and the best in life. Louis ends up getting a hand up from a streetwalker named Ophelia [Jamie Lee Curtis from Halloween, The Fog, True Lies and Virus]. Then Billy Ray finds out about the bet that the Duke brothers made. After that a crazy plan for revenge is set into place and hilarity ensues. Also excellent in the movie are Denholm Elliott [from Raiders Of The Lost Ark and Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade] as Coleman the butler, the very hot Kristin Holby as Louis's stuck up girlfriend Penelope, Paul Gleason [from Die Hard and a zillion tv shows] as the nasty Clarence Beeks, Bill Cobbs   [from Demolition Man, The Hudsucker Proxy, The Outer Limits, The Others, The Drew Carey Show and Enterprise] as the bartender, Bo Didley as the pawnbroker, Jim Belushi [from Mr. Destiny, Saturday Night Live and According To Jim] as Harvey and Al Franken [from Saturday Night Live] as a baggage handler. I love when Louis crashes the company Christmas party with a gun and a filthy Santa suit, when Beeks is on the phone and abruptly tells someone wanting the phone to Fuck Off then goes back to his call, and when they dress Beeks in a gorilla suit and put him in the cage with the gorilla. First of all, make sure you watch The Arrival before seeing The Arrival 2. That's my recommendation for maximum movie watching enjoyment. So after Zane Ziminski's discovery of alien terraformers here causing climate change and disguising themselves as humans and hiding among us  , The Arrival 2 starts with word of Zane's death on the news. Then certain people receive Zane's failsafe letters detailing the invasion. The cast is cool and includes Patrick Muldoon [from Starship Troopers], the very hot Jane Sibbett [from The Resurrected, Quantum Leap, Herman's Head and played Ross's lesbian ex-wife on Friends], Michael Sarrazin, Catherine Blythe, Michael Scherer [a stuntman cast as a bad guy!] and Larry Day [from Punisher War Zone and Student Bodies]. This is a lower budget movie with no huge stars in it but the cast does a great job and the production value is pretty high. The Arrival 2 actually shows us some great new alien tech like the briefcase that interfaces with the sphere, the cool hologram pyramid computer, the killer alien robot spider and the Arriver's knockout needle. I really love the cool camera shot that goes right through an suv as it drives away. Also cool is the whole meeting in the freezer thing, the newspaper headlines about the deadly heatwave that's going on, how they discredit and bankrupt their human enemies, and how the movie is set in my cool country Canada. Some of the computer graphics might not be ILM quality, but they still work well. If the studio let me make The Arrival 3, I'd like to see a crossover fight between the Decoys franchise. With The Arrivers loving heat and warming the Earth,  the cold based aliens from Decoys would make a cool nemesis! They could be at war for domination of the universe and battle it out over earth while fighting a growing human resistance. Either that, or I'd do a big budget all out battle with the terraforming Arrivers before it's too late. I'd bring back Charlie Sheen as Zane Zaminski who just faked his death and went off the grid. And team him up with Patrick Muldoon as his brother and Jane Sibbett as Bridget Riordan author of "Alien Agenda". They'd lead a large scale rebellion against a now public enemy menace. But you'd absolutely need the exact cast to really make it work with the series and possibly even revive it. That's my take on the series as a fan anyway. Memento is a very unique and interesting movie. A man named Leonard [Guy Pearce from L.A. Confidential, Ravenous, Rules Of Engagement,  The Time Machine remake, First Snow and The Hurt Locker] who has brain damage that eliminated his short term memory. So Leonard only remembers anything new for a few minutes. The movie goes forward and backward and each scene is disjointed in the timeline. The affect is jarring at first, but it's the best and only way to show what Leonard has to go through. As somebody who writes tons of things on my hand every day I like how Leonard uses tattoos for important info he doesn't want to forget. I also like the liberal use of the old polaroid camera, Leonards interesting arguement that memory is unreliable anyway, how he talks about his various memory systems, and how he just barely knows what's going on. The rest of the cast is great too, including Joe Pantoliano [from The Goonies, Midnight Run, The Fugitive, Bad Boys, US Marshals, The Matrix, Bad Boys II, The Outer Limits, The Handler and The Sopranos], Carrie-Anne Moss   [from The Matrix, Red Planet, The Animatrix, Fido, Nightmare Cafe and Nowhere Man], Stephen Tobolowsky [from Memoirs Of An Invisible Man, Sneakers, Groundhog Day, Spaceballs, Seinfeld, The Pretender, The Drew Carey Show, The Practice, That 70's Show, The Lone Gunmen, Off Centre, Las Vegas, CSI Miami, Deadwood, Heroes and Big Day], and Callum Keith Rennie [from Timecop, eXistenZ, Excess Baggage, The Butterfly Effect, The Outer Limits, La Femme Nikita, Battlestar Galactica, Flashforward and 24]. Memento is the kind of movie that really brings you into an experience other than your own. The editing may seem like a gimmick at first, but it actually fits the movie perfectly. Memento has a cool story and it really does a great job of bringing you along. Christopher Nolan directed Memento, and I think it got him the job on the new Batman franchise. Gremlins is an 80's classic! A great combo of horror, comedy and heartwarming Christmas movie. My two favorite Christmas movies are Gremlins and Die Hard. Randall Peltzer is one of my favorite movie inventors.  While out selling his inventions he buys a strange creature called a Mogwai. The rules are sunlight can kill him, don't get him wet and never feed him after midnight. Gremlins has a healthy dose of gory old 80's horror. Like when Mrs Peltzer creams a gremlin in the food processor and cooks one in the microwave. And I love scenes like the guy in the Santa suit being swarmed by bloodthirsty Gremlins, when the Gremlins mess with Dick Miller's TV reception then run him down with his own tractor, and Kate's heartwarming story of finding her father dead in the chimney wearing a Santa suit. The cast is great, including Zach Galligan, the smokin hot Phoebe Cates [from Fast Times At Ridgemont High, Private School, Bright Lights Big City and Drop Dead Fred], Keye Luke [from Dead Heat, Thundarr The Barbarian, Voyagers!, Street Hawk and MacGyver], Corey Feldman [from Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter, The Goonies, Stand By Me, The Lost Boys, License To Drive and The Burbs], and Dick Miller   [from The Howling, Terminator, Night Of The Creeps, Innerspace, Dead Heat, Matinee, The Flash and Eerie Indiana]. Gremlins has so many cool scenes, like the radio report in the background saying the marines are coming to fight the Gremlins with hoses, or when Stripe shoots another Gremlin over a poker dispute. I like the tv's in the background playing It's A Wonderfull Life and the original Invasion Of The Body Snatchers, and when The Gremlin in the Christmas Tree tries to kill his mom and Billy chops his head off and burns it in the fireplace. The cool gross pods that turn Mogwai into Gremlin, and Stripe using the chainsaw to try to kill Billy. The Gremlins in the theater entranced by Snow White, Gizmo in the Barbie car and Spike's gory and melting demise are all cool.
